The American Eagle Platinum Coin Series debuted in 1997. When it was first released, the series offered a Brilliant Uncirculated coin that has maintained the same designs to this day. The Proof version was also released in 1997, but has used new designs on one side each year. From 1997 to 2017, it was the reverse that was refreshed. As of 2018, the obverse side is the one with a refreshed image each year.

Obverse

A vision of the Statue of Liberty is found on the obverse of Proof American Eagle 1/4 oz Platinum Coins. This vision of the stoic face of Liberty from the famous statue was created for this series in 1997 by John Mercanti. It is accompanied by inscriptions of Liberty, In God We Trust, E Pluribus Unum, and the date mark.

Reverse

For the reverse design of Proof American Eagle Platinum Coins, a new design is featured with each date mark. From 1998 to 2002, the Vistas of Liberty Series showcased the bald eagle in flight over different parts of the country with each date. The 2006-2008 Foundations of Democracy Series showed off symbols representing the three branches of the federal government. Inscriptions on this face typically include United States of America, .9995 Platinum 1/4 oz., and the W mint mark of the West Point Mint.

History

BU and Proof American Eagle Platinum Coins were initially offered with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins. This continued through 2008. In 2009, the US Mint suspended all versions of the BU coin and the fractional-ounce proof coins. The 1 oz proof coin was the only option struck until 2016 when the 1 oz BU coin made a permanent return. No fractionals are struck in this series any longer.
