The Proof American Platinum Eagle Coin stands out within the American Eagle series for its use of changing designs on one side of the coin. From its introduction in 1997 through 2017, most annual releases featured a unique reverse design. Beginning in 2018, the United States Mint changed course by updating the obverse design each year instead. Although fractional-weight Platinum Eagles are no longer struck today, these coins were an important part of the series until their production ended in 2008. Currently, certified Proof American Eagle 1/4 oz Platinum Coins are available online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
These Proof American Eagle 1/4 oz Platinum Coins are available in PR or PF70 condition. A PR/PF70 designation indicates a coin with no visible flaws, clean surfaces, and full original luster. After payment clears, the specific year and design will be chosen at random. Requests for a particular issue, label, or design cannot be accommodated.
Obverse
The obverse design of the Proof American Eagle Platinum Coin features the Statue of Liberty in a detailed, close-range portrait. This artwork was designed by John Mercanti and introduced in 1997 exclusively for the Platinum Eagle series. Libertys serene expression and the rays of her crown are rendered with strong detail and balance. The inscriptions here include LIBERTY, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and IN GOD WE TRUST, as well as a date mark.
Reverse
On the reverse of the Proof Eagle 1/4 oz Platinum Coin, collectors may encounter a variety of designs depending on the year of issue. For this fractional size, reverse imagery typically includes the American bald eagle or symbolic scenes representing American ideals. One notable collection is the Vistas of Liberty series from 1998 to 2002, which showcased a bald eagle soaring above different regions of the country each year. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, .9995 PLATINUM, 1/4 OZ, $25, and a W mint mark.
History
The Proof American Platinum Eagle program debuted in 1997 with four weights available: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. Each denomination was offered in Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated finishes. Production of fractional Proof coins continued through 2008, after which these smaller sizes were discontinued.
