The Proof American Eagle Coins were issued in 1986 and met with intense interest from silver buyers. After a production history spanning five different decades, as of 2021, the 1986 coin remains the highest-minted at 1.446 million coins. The remaining issues of the 1980s and the first coin of the 1990s represent the oldest and some of the lowest-minted in the history of the Proof American Eagle Silver Coin.

Obverse

On the obverse of Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins is Walking Liberty. Created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman, this vision of Liberty depicts her figure in left-profile relief with the American flag draped around her figure. Liberty carries the branches of oak and laurel in her left hand as she walks toward the sun. The inscriptions on this face read Liberty, In God We Trust, and the individual date mark of each coin.

Reverse

The reverse of the Proof American Eagle Silver Coin comes with the heraldic eagle of the United States. The modern version of a design that dates to 1795, this image was created by John Mercanti in 1986. It depicts a front-facing bald eagle supporting the US national shield while clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. Inscriptions on this side include United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, 1 oz. Fine Silver – One Dollar, and the S mint mark of the San Francisco Mint.

History

The Proof American Eagle Silver Coin was issued by the San Francisco Mint for a total of seven years from 1986 to 1992. That means this set with four coins from the San Francisco Mint years represents more than half of the S mint mark coins in the collection.

Ordering

Proof American Eagle 4-Coin Silver Sets listed here come with near-perfect grades. Coins in PR69 condition have full, original mint luster and a maximum of two minor flaws. These detractions are limited to minuscule contact marks or hairlines and must be located outside the primary focal points. The DCAM designation indicates proof coins with strong, frosted strikes on deeply-mirrored, clear fields.
