The year 2021 brought renewed attention to two classic US silver dollar designs that remain favorites among collectors. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the last Morgan Dollar and the introduction of the original Peace Dollar, the US Mint revived both historic designs. Starting in 2023, these silver dollars have been issued as part of an ongoing annual program. Today, certified Proof Peace Dollar Silver Coins are available online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
These Proof Peace Dollar Silver Coins are offered in PF/PR69 certified condition. Coins with this grade display excellent eye appeal, full mint luster, and only very minor imperfections. Any small contact marks or hairlines are limited to areas outside the main focal points. Please note that the year of issue, mint mark, and slab label cannot be guaranteed, as all coins are selected at random after payment clears.
Obverse
The obverse of the Proof Peace Dollar Coin was designed by Anthony de Francisci and features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty. She wears a spiked crown with rays extending outward, representing freedom and optimism for the future. De Francisci based Libertys image on his wife, Teresa, which helped give the design a softer, more natural appearance than earlier depictions used on US silver dollars. The inscriptions here include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRVST, and the date.
Reverse
On the reverse, the Proof Peace Dollar Silver Coin shows a bald eagle at rest atop a rock while holding an olive branch. This imagery was selected to symbolize peace after the end of World War I. The relaxed posture of the eagle marked a change from earlier coin designs that often showed the bird in a more aggressive stance, reinforcing the peaceful theme behind the series. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE DOLLAR, and PEACE.
History
Peace Dollars were first issued in 1921 using a high-relief design, but production challenges quickly became apparent. The high relief caused rapid die wear and made stacking difficult, leading the Mint to adopt a lower relief starting in 1922. Large quantities of Peace Dollars were struck at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco mints to satisfy the Pittman Act. Mintages were especially high in 1922, with strong output continuing in 1923, helping establish the Peace Dollar as Americas standard silver dollar.
