  • United States Mint Proof Sets

In addition to the coining of millions of circulation pieces each year, the United States Mint produces a wide range of bullion coin collections and collectible proof sets. The variety of proof sets from the mint is incredibly diverse and includes options that boast silver content, with circulating coins included in special strikes. The one constant in US Mint Proof Sets is the beautiful visual appeal of the coins.

US Mint Proof Sets – Focused on Beauty

Regardless of the type of US Mint Proof Set you purchase, you will find that all of the coins have one thing in common. Each coin in a Proof Set has a special proof strike, whether it’s a one-time strike or a circulating coin. The proof coins in these sets feature frosted finishes on the design element and mirror-like background fields.

What Makes US Mint Proof Sets different?

There is no precious metal content in any of the coins issued in a US Mint Proof Set. The US Mint issues separate Silver Proof Sets with select silver coins inside and standard Proof Sets with no silver coins included. A typical US Mint Proof Set includes at least the following coins:

    • Penny
    • Nickel
    • Dime
    • Quarter
    • Half Dollar
    • Dollar

Each one of these coins comes with the US Mint’s standard metallic alloy that offers durability for circulation use. The Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar have the modern cupronickel alloy that consists of 8.33% nickel with a remaining balance of copper. The Penny has 2.5% copper with a remaining balance of zinc. The Nickel contains 25% nickel and 75% copper. The Dollar has 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, and 2% nickel with a remaining balance of copper.

Example of a US Mint Proof Set

The 2020 US Mint Proof Set is a great example of the kind of options available in the Proof Set Series. The US Mint offered a staggering total of 11 coins in this set. The six circulating denominations were offered in their proper alloys with a proof finish and boasted the aforementioned Penny, Nickel, Dime, Quarter, Half Dollar, and Dollar coins. Also included in the 2020 Proof Set were five circulating quarters known as ATB Quarters, each one featuring the five respective designs from the 2020 America the Beautiful release schedule.

All US Mint Proof Sets are produced at the San Francisco Mint. The coins each come with an S mint mark and all coins are packaged together in plastic holders. For example, the 2020 Proof Set packages all six circulating coins together in a plastic holder and all five America the Beautiful Quarters together in a separate plastic holder. The US Mint packages the holders together in a commemorative sleeve, with a Certificate of Authenticity available.
