  • BU Eagle Silver Coins at Provident Metals

The American Eagle Silver Coin is the official silver bullion coin of the United States. These coins come in three different variations and are minted annually by the US Mint. While all variations of this coin are popular, the most popular is the BU version. Learn more about BU Eagle Silver Coins, right here at Provident Metals.

History of the BU Eagle Silver Coin

Established on July 9, 1985, the Liberty Coin Act called for the production of a 1 oz silver coin with a purity of at least .999 pure silver, with a rendition of Liberty on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse. This act quickly led to the creation of the American Eagle Silver Coin, which was released on November 24, 1986.

The BU version of the American Eagle Silver Coin was released alongside a proof coin. The BU version has been released annually ever since. The BU American Eagle Silver Coin is issued every year in just a 1 oz weight. These coins have a face value of $1 (USD) and have a purity of .999 pure silver. All of which is backed by the United States.

Throughout this coin program’s history, three branches of the US Mint have struck these iconic coins. From 1986 to 1998 these coins were struck at the San Francisco Mint. From 1999 to 2000 these coins were struck at both the Philadelphia Mint and the West Point Mint. Ever since 2001, these coins have been made at the West Point Mint.

Design of the BU Eagle Silver Coin

    • Obverse: The obverse design has remained the same since 1986. It features the iconic Adolph A. Weinman design known as Walking Liberty. This depiction of Liberty shows her walking to the sun whilst holding onto oak branches and being draped in the American flag. This design was first used in 1916 on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar.
    • Reverse 1986-2021: The reverse side from 1986 to the first half of 2021 saw John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle take centerstage. This design shows an eagle in front-facing relief, with a shield on its chest, and 13 five-pointed stars above the eagle’s head.
    • Reverse 2021-Present: In the latter half of 2021, the US Mint updated the reverse design. The new design showcases a flying eagle with a branch in its talons and its wings spread wide. This image was created by Emily Damstra.

Notably, 2021 coins feature both reverse designs. Type 1 coins showcase the old John Mercanti design, while Type 2 coins display the new Emily Damstra design.

Packaging for the BU Eagle Silver Coin

What type of packaging your BU Eagle Silver Coin arrives in is dependent on how many you order. Individual coins are packaged in protective plastic flips. Larger orders such as quantities of 20, are available in sealed protective plastic tubes. For multiples of 500 coins, the US Mint also offers Monster Boxes which contains 25 tubes of 20 coins.
