A New Option in Silver Bullion: Silver Foils at Provident Metals

When it comes to buying silver bullion online, most investors turn to coins, bars, and rounds, while collectors have a broader range of options that include coins, bars, and rounds, as well as silver bullets and statues. Now, there’s another option out there for those interested in silver bullion. Silver foils offer a thin, affordable version of silver for investors and collectors, with full-color designs that are photo-quality. Provident Metals has some of the latest silver foils available from various different collections.

Australian Silver Foils

The Perth Mint was the first to introduce silver foils to investors and collectors. The release of silver foils at the Perth Mint comes with .999 pure silver content and photo-realistic images on one side. In particular, its silver foils offer movie poster designs with mintages limited to just 1,000 foils per series.

In the first silver foil release from Perth Mint, the 2019 35 Gram Silver Alien Movie Poster Foil was released to mark the 40th anniversary of the 1979 release of the feature film Alien. The full-color graphics featured on the obverse side of the silver foil replicate the theatrical movie poster displayed at theaters around the United States when Alien was released. The artwork, which includes the egg-shaped alien craft from the film, is based on the original work from Philip Gips. Design elements include:

  • Obverse: The obverse side of the silver foil features the movie poster with the full-color, photo-realistic imaging. The egg-shaped craft is depicted in the center of the field with its eerie green light emanating from the base of the craft.
  • Reverse: On the reverse field of the silver foils in this release is a repeating design element. This includes the name “Perth Mint” with the mint logo in front of the text.

Each one of the Alien 40th Anniversary Foils is housed inside of a clear Perspex case that can stand on its own for display and comes with a black Perth Mint shipping box.

In the next release of silver foils from the Perth Mint, movie posters remain the primary focus in the five-foil release of James Bond Movie Posters. In honor of the release of the 25th feature film from Eon Productions, the Perth Mint replicated the appearance of five James Bond theatrical posters, each one representing the films in which actor Daniel Craig portrayed bond.

Craig has been playing Bond on the big screen for more than 15 years since stepping into the role in 2006 when the series relaunched with Casino Royale. Craig is now just the third actor to portray Bond five times or more and is second behind only Sean Connery and Roger Moore, both of whom portrayed Bond in seven films. Designs in the James Bond Movie Poster foil release include:

  • Casino Royale
  • Quantum of Solace
  • Skyfall
  • Spectre
  • No Time To Die

On the reverse side of each of the 5 Gram Silver James Bond Movie Poster Foils is the image of the 007 logo at the center. The name and logo of the Perth Mint appear on the reverse, as well as the name of each individual film. Each one of the individual silver foils is packaged inside of a clear Perspex case with mounting hardware on the reverse that enables you to mount the foil in its case directly on the wall. If you’d prefer, you can leave each silver foil and Perspex case in the base of its shipping box for upright display on desks, shelves, and tables.

Other World Silver Foils

The first silver foil issued as a legal tender piece of silver was the 2020 Harry Potter House Banner Series. Released for the South Pacific nation of Niue, these 5 Gram silver foils feature .999 pure silver content and come with an assigned face value of $1 (NZD). The obverse of the silver foils in this collection include a circular design element at the center with a right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Designed in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley, this effigy was the fourth-generation image from the Royal Mint of England and has been in use throughout Commonwealth nations as of 1999. Included with the design are inscriptions of “Elizabeth II,” “Niue,” “One Dollar,” and “2020.”

In the Harry Potter House Banner Series of foils, the issuing mint offers four full-color designs for collectors. Mintages for each design are capped at 10,000 silver foils and include the representative animals and colors for the following houses:

  • Gryffindor: Design includes a lion with red and gold colors
  • Hufflepuff: Design features a badger with yellow and black colors
  • Ravenclaw: Design offers a raven with the colors blue and golden brown
  • Slytherin: Design field comes with a snake and the colors green and black

Harry Potter is one of the most popular fantasy-themed collections released in the last three decades. The creation of British author J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter is a seven-novel, eight-film collection. The final book in the series was spread across two feature films to conclude the movie series. Featured prominently throughout the series is the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where each of the students get separated by the sorting hat into respective houses aligning with the characteristics and behaviors of the individual student.

Each one of the silver foils in the Harry Potter House Banner Series comes packaged inside of an individual plastic case with a themed shipping box from the mint.

Silver Foils Explained

Silver foils are a unique option for investors and collectors. Each silver foil is a thin silver bullion piece no different than a piece of paper. One significant difference between silver foils and many other silver bullion products is the primary design element. Many silver foils have photo-quality designs with full-color graphics on the primary design element, such as each of the James Bond Movie Poster Foils.

Inspiration for Silver Foils?

One of the likely sources of inspiration for silver foils was the recent introduction of silver Certificates of Authenticity. Coins issued in late 2018 and throughout 2019 began to debut an included Certificate of Authenticity that was itself made from .999 pure silver. The popularity of the silver COAs is likely what resulted in the eventual production of standalone silver items such as silver foils.
