Australian Silver Coins

Australian Silver Coins at Provident Metals

The Perth Mint is one of the world’s most well-known minting facilities. They’re known for their array of gold and silver bullion products, including their several silver annual bullion coin programs. While most annual coin programs retain the same imagery year after year, the Perth Mint is known for changing the designs with every issue. Learn more about these Australian Silver Coins, right here at Provident Metals.

Obverse Designs of Australian Silver Coins

The obverse of Perth Mint coins display the effigy of the reigning British monarch. This has included many unique designs over the years.

  • 1985-1998: Queen Elizabeth II designed by Raphael Maklouf.
  • 1999-2018: Queen Elizabeth II designed by Ian Rank-Broadley.
  • 2019-2023: Queen Elizabeth II designed by Jody Clark.
  • 2024-Present: King Charles III designed by Dan Thorne.

Australian Kangaroo Silver Coins

The Australian Kangaroo Silver Series is among the newer coin programs issued by the Perth Mint. This silver bullion coin program debuted in 2015 and is the first Perth Mint silver coin program to have a purity of .9999 pure silver.

Gold coins in the program offer new visuals for each new release. However, silver coins have used the same image of the kangaroo since the debut of the series. While a proof coin in the series was introduced in 1993, silver bullion coins were readily produced until 2015.

The design used on the reverse is based on a 1938 design for the Australian copper penny which shows a kangaroo in left-profile relief.

Coins are issued in just a 1 oz size, however, unique strikes such as gilded and colorized coins are available in larger sizes such as 2 oz and 5 oz.

Australian Koala Silver Coins

Debuting in 2007, this series shows a unique image of a koala on the reverse with every new coin. Coins issued from 2007 to 2017 are made with .999 pure silver, and we’re upgraded to .9999 silver starting in 2018.

Silver BU coins in the Australian Koala Silver Series are available annually in 2 sizes, 1 oz and 1 kilogram. From 2008 to 2015, 1/2 oz and 10 oz coins were also available.

Other variations in the series are also available, such as proof coins, high-relief strikes, and incuse high-relief coins.

Australian Kookaburra Silver Coins

The Perth Mint launched the Australian Kookaburra Silver Coin Series in 1990. Similar to their koala series, the reverse image changes annually. Also similarly, any coin from 2017 and earlier will be composed of .999 silver, the series upgraded to .9999 pure silver in 2018.

Coins are issued annually in three unique sizes, 1 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kilogram. However, a 2 oz coin was made available from 1992 to 2009.

Perth Mint Lunar Series

One of the most popular coin programs offered by the Perth Mint is their Lunar Series, which kicked off in 1996, with the issuance of gold coins. Silver coins followed in 1999. Lunar Series II debuted in 2008, overlapping with the conclusion of Lunar Series I for silver. Lunar Series III debuted in 2020.

Each coin showcases an image of the lunar animal along with the traditional Chinese character for the animal. Notably, as of 2024, coins in this series still have Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.

The Perth Mint releases an array of silver coins in the Lunar Series annually. BU coins are available in several unique sizes ranging from 10 kilograms to 1/2 oz coins. Also available in the series are unique strikes such as gilded coins, colorized proof strikes, and even 4-coin rectangular coin sets.

Other Popular Coin Programs

  • Australian Emu Silver Coins: This annual coin series got its start in 2018 and has been released every year since. Coins are issued in a 1 oz size and every issue displays a unique emu on the reverse.
  • Wedge-Tailed Eagle Series: This collection debuted in 2014 with, for the most part, unique images of the bird on each issue. These coins have a lower mintage cap than most of the Perth Mint’s releases. These coins are designed by John Mercanti, former Chief Engraver of the US Mint.
