One of the most trusted names in the coin-grading industry is the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). The third-party coin grading service is independent of any private or sovereign mint and is still a top name in the industry today. The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation was founded in 1987, just a few years after the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). The NGC, like the PCGS, uses the Sheldon Scale of 1 to 70 to grade coins. In theory, a coin with a grade of 70 is 70 times more valuable than a coin with a grade of 1.
The American Numismatic Association and Professional Numismatists Guild each use the NGC as their official grading service. The NGC employs more than 30 full-time coin graders as well as outside consultants to ensure each coin is graded meticulously and correctly.
Both the NGC and the PCGS use unique terminology to further classify coins. Some terminologies such as Mint State (MS) and About Uncirculated (AU) are used by both coin grading providers. However, some are strictly just for NGC coins. These include the following:
