PCGS Certified Silver Coins at Provident Metals
Certified Silver Coins are a great option for people who are looking to obtain a specific silver coin and be sure of the condition you’ll receive it. One of the most trusted names in the coin-grading industry is the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). The PCGS was originally a small group of the nation’s leading coin experts that realized there was a problem in the way people graded and verified coins. They are now one of the most respected names in the industry. Learn more about PCGS Certified Silver Coins, right here at Provident Metals.
Background on the PCGS
Before the PCGS, coins were graded on a simple scale of good, fine, or uncirculated. A small group of experts then came together to create the PCGS in 1985. The PCGS would adopt the Sheldon Scale, created by Dr. William Sheldon, to grade coins on a scale of 1 to 70.
In theory, a coin with a grade of 70 is 70 times more valuable than a coin with a grade of 1. While the original scale was created in 1948, the PCGS refined and modernized the scale over the years.
Coins are sent to the PCGS where they’re meticulously examined and graded. Coins are then encapsulated to preserve their grade before being returned to their owner.
PCGS Specific Terminology
The PCGS and the NGC both use the Sheldon Scale, as well as terms such as Mint State (MS) and First Day of Issue (FDOI). However, the PCGS also has terminology exclusive to them. These include the following:
- First Strike (FS): Indicates a coin that was received by the PCGS within 30 days of the initial release of the coin.
- Proof (PR): Indicates a coin that is a proof strike.
- Deep Cameo (DCAM): Reserved for proof coins. Indicates a coin that has a strong, frosted finish with a mirrored background.
Popular Options
- American Eagle Silver Coins: The American Eagle Silver Coin is among the world’s most popular. As such, it’s one of the most popular PCGS products as well. These coins have been issued annually since 1986 and have three different variations – BU, burnished, and proof strikes.
- Silver Dollars: Silver Dollars, specifically Morgan Dollar Silver Coins and Peace Dollar Silver Coins are extremely popular PCGS products. These coins have been around since as early as the late 1800s and have recently made a return in 2021.
- ATB Coins: America the Beautiful Coins were issued by the US Mint from 2010 to 2021. With 56 coins in the overall series, this is a popular certified product as collectors look to collect them all.
