Silver coins are most commonly produced in 1 oz weights. However, some sovereign mints choose to stamp 1/2 oz versions of silver coins. In some cases, they may explore different designs or colors than they usually do. Here’s a rundown on the options you have for 1/2 oz silver coins on Provident Metals.
Popular 1/2 oz Silver Coins on Provident Metals
The names on this list may be surprising, as some of the most popular 1/2 oz silver coins come from sovereign mints that don’t often get the spotlight. Here are the sovereign countries (and their mint partners, if applicable) that produce our most popular 1/2 oz silver coins, along with the list of coins that they create:
- The Perth Mint (Australia) – The Perth Mint is Australia’s sovereign mint responsible for issuing the country’s bullion coinage. It released a version of its famous Lunar series in 2013 as a 1/2 oz silver coin. The mint also issues the Battle of the Coral Sea, a coin commemorating a notable World War II battle. All Perth Mint 1/2 oz silver coins are .999 pure silver.
- Armenia (Geiger Edelmetalle) – Armenia is a small but proud Asian country that sports an iconic coin design in its Noah’s Ark series. The country, which partners with German refiner Geiger Edelmetalle to produce its bullion coins, offers a 1/2 oz silver Noah’s Ark minted in .999 fine silver.
- Ghana/Samoa (Scottsdale Mint) – The Scottsdale Mint has been issuing its Alien series in a 1/2 oz silver denomination for several years. However, the issuing country of the series has changed over time. Earlier Aliens sport the seals and backing of Ghana, while later ones bear the flags and markings of Samoa.
- Niue (The Lithuanian Mint) – Niue is a small Pacific nation that typically collaborates with New Zealand for its bullion coinage. However, in this case, the country issues its 1/2 oz silver Wild Afrika series in concert with the Lithuanian Mint. These .999 pure coins are among the most striking you will ever encounter, with extremely vivid illustrations bearing great detail and a tremendous amount of vibrant colors.
There are plenty of other 1/2 oz silver coin options besides the ones mentioned above, including from some of the mints we discussed. If you’d rather look at some larger silver coins, however, use one of the links below to our other pages.

Different Types of 1/2 oz Silver Coins
There are many different types of 1/2 oz silver coins, and you have to understand all the different abbreviations and lingo that you’ll encounter in order to make an informed choice. Here are some of the bits of lingo you may see:
- BU – “BU” is short for “Brilliant Uncirculated” and describes the condition of the coin itself. Coins that are minted and immediately spirited into protective casings retain a brilliant sheen and have no visible flaw or errors. These coins tend to be made for collectors, and they are quite valuable pieces.
- Varied Condition – When coins have circulated or handled, they acquire nicks, dings, and other abrasions. These bits of damage tend to reduce the value of the coin, although they aren’t enough to affect the amount of silver contained within or its underlying quality. Coins in varied condition are usually the most inexpensive of their respective classes.
- Proof/Proof-like – A proof coin bears an unmistakable appearance, in that its reliefs (or raised parts) are frosted and its fields (or stamped parts) have a mirrored finish. This appearance is the result of a special minting process, where blanks are washed and then stamped repeatedly under higher pressures than usual. Proof-like coins are not necessarily made specifically as proofs, but bear many of the same appearance features.
- Box & CoA – A CoA is a Certificate of Authenticity and is a record created by an independent grader to certify that the silver coin has its reported composition and weight. Dealers and refiners put the CoA and the silver coin into a nice container – the aforementioned box.
- Rhodium Plating – Silver is a beautiful metal, but has an unfortunate tendency to tarnish. It is not particularly durable, either, so some refiners plate their coins with rhodium – another metal that adds structural strength and helps the coin resist developing a patina.
- Colorized – No matter the minting process, silver coins can only come out in a few colors or finishes. So, some coins – notably, the Niuean coins mentioned above – are produced with additional colorful artwork on them and are much more vivid and striking than almost any other type of coin.
