1 oz Silver Coins

As is the case for gold coins, sovereign mints worldwide produce most of their silver coins in the 1 oz denomination. Many offer their signature coin series in 1 oz silver as a companion piece to the 1 oz gold coins.

Popular 1 oz Silver Coins on Provident Metals

We have a great deal of 1 oz silver coins for sale here at Provident Metals. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular in our stock.

  • Silver Eagle—The US Mint’s original bullion series is the Eagle series, and it makes versions of this coin in both gold and silver. The 1 oz silver version is minted with .999 fine silver and features the same Augustus Saint-Gaudens design that the gold Eagles bear.
  • Silver Maple Leaf – The silver Maple Leaf is part of the iconic series from the Royal Canadian Mint. Like its gold counterparts, the silver Maple Leaf is minted to be extremely pure. It is one of the few 1 oz silver coins with a .9999 fine composition.
  • Silver Kookaburra/Koala/Lunar – All three of these 1 oz silver coins are the products of the Perth Mint. The Perth Mint is the venerable mint responsible for creating bullion coins for Australia. All three are minted with .999 fine silver, and the first two feature fauna native to the continent. The Silver Lunars are part of the Perth Mint’s ongoing series depicting the Chinese Zodiac.
  • Silver Krugerrand – South Africa shook up the world when it introduced the world to its gold Krugerrand in 1967. Nowadays, the South African Mint produces a 1 oz silver Krugerrand with .999 pure silver. Like its gold counterpart, it features images of Boer leader Paul Kruger and a springbok antelope.
  • Silver Philharmonic – The Austrian Mint produces one of the few coins that pays tribute to music. The 1 oz silver Philharmonic features the Musikverein’s pipe organ on its obverse and a series of orchestral instruments on its reverse. Each one is minted with 99.9% fine silver.
  • Silver Myths and Legends/Britannia—The Royal Mint has created gold and silver coins since 886, so it’s no surprise that it offers 1 oz silver coins as part of its product lines. Two of its series, the Myths and Legends and its trademark Britannia, offer an ounce of silver in a .999 pure coin.
  • Silver Noah’s Ark – Despite its small size, Armenia has managed to create its own iconic coin series. Through a partnership with Germany’s Geiger Edelmetalle, its Noah’s Ark coins depict one of the Bible’s most famous stories in .999 pure silver. Each coin is backed by the full faith and credit of the Armenian government, and bears a face value of 500 dram.

Different Types of 1 oz Silver Coins

1 oz silver coins come with different features, finishes, and other specifications. Like most activities, numismatism comes with its own set of lingo and terminology. To be a savvy investor, you must know what the different abbreviations and terms mean, so check out the list below:

  • BU – BU stands for “Brilliant Uncirculated,” and refers to coins that have never been purchased or even handled by human hand, for the most part. They have an extremely shiny luster and have no visible flaws to the untrained eye.
  • Random year – The year of a coin’s mintage matters because some years are rarer or more desirable than others. If you don’t mind taking a coin from one of the less popular years, you can often receive the 1 oz silver coin at a reduced price from the coins from a specific year.
  • Monster box – A large bulk container that allows you to buy many coins at one time. Most monster boxes contain 500 coins and are sealed by the mint itself. They are certified to carry the exact coins and the exact quantity of coins that are advertised.
  • Tube – A smaller bulk container that contains 20 1 oz silver coins. This option allows you to buy silver coins more cost-effectively. Even though tubes are more expensive upfront, each coin is cheaper on a unit basis than if you buy them one at a time.
  • Star privy – A privy mark is a small mark inscribed into a coin that conveys additional information about its provenance. In this case, some American Eagles come with a privy mark in the form of a small star on their obverse.
  • ER/FS – ER stands for “Early Release,” and FS stands for “First Strike.” In either case, these abbreviations designate coins that were graded within 30 days from their mintage. These coins don’t even have a chance to accrue any wear and tear or damage and are almost always in mint state.
  • NGC – NGC stands for “Numismatic Guaranty Company,” and is one of the two best-known and respected grading services in the world. The other one is the Professional Coin Grading Service, so be aware if you see a reference to “PCGS.” In either case, it’s a reflection of the authenticity of the coin in question.
  • MS/MS# – MS stands for “Mint State,” and refers to coins with little to no damage at all – even at the microscopic level. Many times, the MS may come with a number, which is a reflection of its grade on the Sheldon Grading Scale. Numbers can go as high as 70, and any coin graded above 60 could be considered a mint state coin.
  • Box & CoA – A CoA is a Certificate of Authenticity, and is the report from the NGC, PCGS, or other independent grading service that certifies the coin to be the weight and composition it claims to be. Thus, CoAs convey an additional level of certainty to coins, and they are often packaged together in a fancy container…or box.
  • DCAM/UCAM – These two abbreviations refer to the degree of sharpness a proof coin bears. This level of contrast is known as the “cameo,” and coins with especially brilliant cameos may be classified as “deep cameo,” or DCAM, or even “ultra cameo,” or UCAM.
