2 oz Silver Coins

While the standard weight for most silver coins remains 1 oz, there are plenty of options to be found of the 2 oz variety. In fact, one notable coin series – Great Britain’s Queen’s Beasts –  famously adopted the 2 oz silver coin as its standard denomination.

These days, sovereign mints are exploring the 2 oz silver space with different shapes and colors on the coins. Let’s explore the selection of 2 oz silver coins we have here at Provident.

Now, of all the world’s mints to offer a 2 oz silver coin, the US Mint is not one of them. The domestic mint seems content to offer the 1 oz Silver Eagle and be done with it.

However, that does not mean top mints avoid 2 oz silver coins. Here are some of the most prominent mints and their offerings:

  • Royal Canadian Mint – The RCM’s 2 oz coin, however, is the Bull and Bear. The Bull and Bear represents the two directions that the economy may go, and is minted to be 99.99% pure. Incidentally, this purity is what put the Royal Canadian Mint on the numismatic map, as its extreme high-purity coins were pioneers in the space.
  • The Royal Mint – The Royal Mint has been offering coinage for over 1,000 years, and has several coin series that include 2 oz silver versions. The most notable of those series is the Queen’s Beasts, which used 2 oz as its standard size. Other coin series that have 2 oz versions of some sort (like proofs or special issues) include the Myths and Legends series, the Beatles coins, and the James Bond series.
  • The Perth Mint (Australia) – The Perth Mint is Australia’s sovereign mint that produces its bullion coinage. It offers two notable coin series, and both the Kangaroo and the Lunar silver series have produced 2 oz coins, albeit less regularly. Both coins are minted .9999 fine.
  • The South African Mint – The South African Mint will always have a place in precious metals lore as the originator of the bullion coin market in 1967. Its gold Krugerrand remains its flagship item, and it produces a 2 oz silver version of the famous coin as part of its coin package.
  • The Bavarian Mint (by way of Somalia) – Germany’s sovereign mint is an interesting one, in that its most popular coin series is a representative of an African nation that has undergone civil turmoil almost continually for several decades. The Somalian Elephants are available in several different metals, and one of those issues is a 2 oz silver version, minted to be 99.99% pure.
  • The New Zealand Mint (by way of Niue) – Despite its small size, the island nation of Niue has a wide and varied selection of coins produced under its flag. The 2 oz silver coins are issued by the New Zealand Mint. Niue maintains a close diplomatic relationship with New Zealand and does not have the resources to produce its own bullion coins yet. There are plenty of 2 oz silver coins from Niue, and most of them are minted with .9999 fine silver.

There are several other countries that produce 2 oz silver coins as well. In addition, we also offer silver coins in two other weights, along with silver bars.

Benefits of Investing in 2 oz Silver Coins

Buying silver is an excellent investment strategy for several reasons. For one thing, silver has served as a store of value for thousands of years. Its value is universally known throughout the world.

However, silver is still the most affordable of the precious metals. Thus, it is common to buy more weight in silver than you would when buying gold or palladium, and 2 oz silver coins allow you to buy silver more efficiently. Here are some of the other benefits of investing in 2 oz silver coins:

  • Diversity – As mentioned, there are some silver coins that are standard-made in the 2 oz weight, rather than the 1 oz. Mints also save some of their more inventive and colorful creations for the 2 oz silver coins, and you can find some options to buy that you cannot find in other denominations.
  • Storage – 2 oz silver coins allow you to consolidate and store your silver more efficiently. Fewer coins to manage the same weight mean that you can stack them and store them in a vault without having to create so many different piles of coins.
  • Laidback feel – Even though you’d never trade a bullion coin for its face value, there remains a sense with 1 oz silver coins that they must be official. With the 2 oz versions, there is much less pressure. You’ll find uniquely-shaped coins and intricate designs that are not found in other weights.
