The first Dollar Silver Coin was introduced in 1804. However, it was scarcely produced. It wasn’t until 1836 when the US Mint upped their silver content to 90% that Dollar Silver Coins became issued regularly.
From 1836 to 1873, Dollar Silver Coins featured the design known as Seated Liberty. This unique design was created by Chief Engraver, Christian Gobrecht. In this image, Liberty is seen sitting on a rock. In 1866, the motto “In God We Trust” was added.
From 1873 to 1878, Dollar Silver Coins were halted due to the influx of silver, as well as the US Mint’s free coining of silver. The next two iterations of the Dollar Silver Coin proved to be the two most popular designs.
One of the most famous coins ever released by the US Mint is the Morgan Dollar Silver Coin. This coin is often regarded as one of the most beautiful. Designed and named by George T. Morgan, these coins were issued annually from 1878 to 1904. They made a one-year comeback in 1921 before being halted again.
What makes this coin unique is that Morgan used the likeness of a Philadelphia school teacher, Anna Williams, in his Liberty design. This differed from the Grecian classicism. The reverse of these coins showcases a unique heraldic eagle image, holding a bundle of arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other.
In 1921, the design of the Dollar Silver Coin was updated. Many argued that following World War I, the US Mint should update the design to display the peace that the United States had following the war. The US Mint issued a content and Anthony de Francisci won, with his design becoming the new design – referred to as the Peace Dollar Silver Coin.
The obverse of these coins features a modern depiction of Lady Liberty. She’s in left-profile relief with a radiate crown and flowing hair. The reverse of these coins showcases a bald eagle perched on a rock with the inscription “Peace” being shown. These coins were released annually from 1921 to 1928, and then again from 1934 to 1935.
