The hobo nickel is an art form where the design of small-denomination coins is modified. The modification of coinage dates to Colonial America in the 1750s, but became prevalent in the early 20th century with the introduction of Fraser’s Buffalo Nickel. MrThe has sculpted 5 hobo nickel designs on 1 oz silver buffalo rounds using a combination of contemporary tools and traditional techniques. Each release can be purchased as a 1 oz proof-like round, 1 oz antiqued round, and 5 oz antiqued round.

The obverse of this 5 oz silver round pays homage to the hobos’ preferred method of transport, and carries a steam engine thundering down the tracks. Delicately sculpted steam flows from the smokestack and wheels. A rustic railroad tie pattern around the rim and the inscriptions “LIBERTY”, and “1913” also feature on the obverse.

The reverse design of this silver round carries a classic hobo. His bag is formed from the buffalo’s hump, and his stick from the line above the denomination. The reverse also features the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, and “FIVE CENTS”.

The hobo nickels also features an edge mark of the coin number.

Each one of these coins was created by Paolo Curcio, known as MrThe in the sculpting world. MrThe is a classically trained artist that studied at the Academy of Fine Arts.
