Following the success of the Royal Mint’s Queen’s Beasts Series, the sovereign mint started a new coin program in 2021, known as the Tudor Beasts Series. While the Queen’s Beasts Series focuses on the heraldic creatures that have a lineage with Queen Elizabeth II, the Tudor Beasts Series celebrates the heraldic beasts of the House of Tudor. The series releases coins in silver, gold, and platinum with several size options available as well. After the success of the first 5 coins in the series, the 6th design focuses on the Tudor Dragon. The design for this release shows the Tudor Dragon looking to its left with its tongue out. In its grasp is a shield embellished with the Beaufort Portcullis, a symbol that traces the lineage of the Tudor Dynasty back to Margaret Beaufort, King Henry VII’s mother.
The Tudor Dragon was adopted into English heraldry by Owen Tudor, King Henry VIII’s great-grandfather. The Tudor Dragon was adopted to highlight the dragon’s Welsh ancestry.
As mentioned above, the Royal Mint strikes these coins in gold, silver, and platinum. Currently, there is just a 1 oz BU platinum coin available for coins in this series. However, gold and silver options are available as both BU coins and proof coins.
Silver BU coins are available in 2 oz and 10 oz options. Gold BU coins are produced in 1 oz and 1/4 oz options. For proof coins, there is a 1 oz gold option, as well as a 10 oz silver option, and a 5 oz silver option.
