Former President Donald J. Trump established the United States Space Force in December 2019 with his signature on the 2020 Defense Authorization Act. The annual spending bill for the Department of Defense included funding for the formation of the US Space Force, the 6th branch of the United States Military and the first new branch since the 1947 establishment of a dedicated US Air Force. The Space Force joins the Air Force as a sister branch within the Department of the Air Force.
