The United States Mint first issued the Buffalo Nickel in 1913. In circulation until 1938, the design was gone from everyday use, but not forgotten. Reverse

Fraser, driven by a desire for accuracy, sought a living representation and discovered artistic inspiration in the form of Black Diamond, an awe-inspiring bison housed at the Central Park Zoo. This extraordinary creature served as the perfect model for Fraser’s meticulously crafted buffalo design. Inscriptions on this side include .999+, FINE SILVER, and ONE TROY OUNCE.
History
The Buffalo Nickel went through several design modifications during its production. The initial design had the words “FIVE CENTS” depicted on a raised mound at the bottom of the reverse side. However, this caused excessive wear, leading to the relocation of the wording to the recessed area in 1913.
