On the obverse of the 1988 American Eagle Gold Coin lies the timeless image of Liberty, crafted in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt to reimagine American gold coinage, this depiction portrays Liberty striding confidently into an unknown future. Inscriptions read LIBERTY, and MCMLXXXVIII.
Reverse
The reverse of all 1988 American Eagle 1 oz Coin showcases the family of nesting bald eagles. It portrays a female bald eagle vigilantly overseeing a nest with young hatchlings, while a male bald eagle with an olive branch in its talons soars overhead. This design, specifically created for these coins by Miley Busiek in 1986, captures the essence of familial care and protection. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 50 DOLLARS.
History
A contributing factor to this decline in popularity was the emergence of various proof American Eagle Gold Coins by 1988. While the bullion coin was initially released with all four weights available in 1986, the proof version was limited to the one-ounce coin. However, by 1988, fractional sizes of 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz were introduced.
