On the obverse of every coin in the 2006-W Proof Eagle 4-Coin Gold Set, the timeless Liberty design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens takes center stage. First designed in 1907, this design has been on the obverse of this series since 1986. Inscriptions read LIBERTY and 2006.
Reverse
Meanwhile, the reverse of every coin in the 2006-W Proof American Eagle 4-Coin Set artfully depicts a family of bald eagles in their natural habitat, designed by Miley Busiek. A male eagle is seen flying over the nest as a female eagle is protecting its hatchlings.
History
Proof American Eagle Gold Coins debuted in 1986 with just a 1 oz weight. Theyve been issued annually every year since then, with the exception of 2009. A 1/2 oz coin debuted in 1987, with two more fractional-ounce weights being introduced the following year.
