Strong global demand for precious metals in 2009 caused production issues for the US Mint, affecting all coin offerings. The Mint focused on the one ounce coins, offering only limited quantities of the fractional weight coins, this late in the year. In spite of these issues, the total number of Gold Eagle coins – of all denominations – minted in 2009 is the fifth-highest total in the history of the coin. And the total number of 1/2 oz Gold Eagles minted in 2009 is also the fifth-highest total in the history of the 1/2 oz coin. Currently, a 2009 American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin is available for purchase from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Will be received in a protective plastic flip!
  • From the 24th year of the American Eagle Gold coin series!
  • Contains 1/2 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • Bears a face value of $25 (USD) fully backed by the American government.
  • The obverse features a Lady Liberty.
  • The reverse features a family of eagles.

2009 marked the tenth year in a row where the price of gold closed higher than it did the previous year. In 2009, the price of gold closed at $1,087.50, an increase of $207.25 over 2008. In addition, in December 2009, the price per ounce of gold reached a new record high of $1,212.50 per ounce before dropping down to its closing price.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2009 American Eagle Gold coin features a full-length figure of Lady Liberty walking forward. She has a large torch in her outstretched right hand and an olive branch in her left. Her hair is free flowing in the breeze. An image of the US Capitol Building is at her feet. This design is the one created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. It includes inscriptions of LIBERTY and 2009.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2009 American Eagle Gold coin features a family of eagles, that symbolizes the importance of family in America. A male eagle, carrying an olive branch in its claws, is flying towards a nest with a female eagle and a couple of eaglets. This design was created by Miley Busiek and sculpted by Sherl J. Winter. It includes the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 25 DOLLARS.

History

The obverse and reverse designs on the American Eagle Gold coins are the result of President Theodore Roosevelts disdain for the artistic appeal of US coinage at the time. Without asking Congress, in 1904, President Roosevelt requested that the talented Augustus Saint-Gaudens be retained to create a design for the Gold Eagles that would return beauty to our US coins. The resulting Saint-Gaudens Lady Liberty creation appeared on the Eagle ($10) and the Double Eagle ($20) gold coins. It is a version of that Lady Liberty that now appears on the American Eagle Gold coins.
