Celebrate one of North America’s greatest carnivores with the Royal Canadian Mint’s $100 for $100 2014 Silver Grizzly Coin.
Comprised of 1 ounce of .9999 fine silver, each stunning coin has a denomination of $100 and features an exquisitely detailed design.
The reverse shows the grizzly bear in a river, a fresh-caught salmon in its mouth. As the bear runs forward, water splashes up, and each of its massive claws can be seen. In the background, the mountains, decked in snowy evergreens, rise up to the horizon. It is inscribed with the words CANADA 2014 and 100 DOLLARS.
The obverse features Susanna Blunt’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth, and it is inscribed with ELIZABETH II and D G REGINA.
Grizzly bears can weigh up to 1,200 pounds — particularly in Canada where they have an ample supply of salmon to eat. The bear’s average weight is 300 to 800 pounds. Grizzlies are sometimes confused with black bears, because their fur can range in color, from light blond to dark black. Most often, their coloring is brown with white tips, giving them a beautiful silvery appearance.
As depicted on this fine silver coin, grizzlies catch fish with their claws and teeth, snatching them out of the air or water as the fish move upstream. The bear is known the world over as one of nature’s finest fisherman.

OverallThe pictures do not do this coin justice. The presentation box and detail were very nice, but the details of the grizzly and the background pop out at you and give you a feeling that you are there at the stream. The engravers have definitely out done themselves again.
And as always, Provident has delivered a wonderful addition to my collection.
