Highlights:
The British Britannia Silver series, introduced by the Royal Mint in 1997, arrived a decade after the debut of gold coins in 1987. Initially, Silver Britannias featured alternating reverse designs of Britannia. It wasn’t until 2011 that the series settled on Philip Nathan’s 1987 depiction of Britannia, matching the design of the gold coins.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2023 Britannia 1 oz Silver Coin proudly features the first-ever portrait of His Majesty King Charles III. This portrayal depicts King Charles III in left-profile relief without a crown. The inscriptions on this side include CHARLES III, D.G. REX. F.D., and 2 POUNDS.
Reverse
Turning to the reverse design of the 2023 British Britannias, you’ll find Philip Nathan’s elegant representation of Britannia. The design presents Britannia in a front-facing relief, holding a trident in her right hand, a Union Jack shield beneath her left hand, and a Corinthian helmet atop her head. Inscriptions here read BRITANNIA, 2023, 1 OZ, 999, and FINE SILVER.
History
Throughout the history of Silver Britannias, only Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II had appeared on these coins. She was depicted in three distinct busts: a 1985 bust by Raphael Maklouf, a 1998 bust by Ian Rank-Broadley, and a 2015 bust by Jody Clark. However, with her passing in September 2022, King Charles III assumed his place on the obverse of the coin in early 2023.
