Tasked with gathering those souls to Valhalla were a host of celestial warrior maidens called the Valkyries, whose iconic mythology has survived to inspire people right into the modern day. Obverse

The round’s obverse side shows Ostara beside her sacred animals, the deer, and the hare, with an inscription of her name appearing above. She sports a simple gown and a floral garland, with a sacred Berkanan rune at her neckline representing the power of regeneration.

Reverse

The Berkanan rune reappears on the reverse as part of a decorative border surrounding the design of an ancient Germanic wooden shield. A boss at its center is flanked by the Mint’s double eagle and a deer, and is accompanied by the inscriptions “GERMANIA 2023,” “1 oz Ag 999.9,” and “5 MARK.”

History

The goddess Ostara was — and is — a deity associated with springtime, the triumph of life over death, the power of fertility, and the revivifying light of the dawn. To the Saxons, she was known as Eostre, and efforts by folklorists and other scholars began in the 19th century to reconstruct what her myths and the patterns of her worship might have looked like, including theorized links between her ritual spring feasts and the shaping of the holiday we know as Easter. She is believed to have been related to Freyja, the commander of the Valkyries, making her a natural subject for celebration in the Valkyries coin series.
