The original English Sovereign featured the reigning monarch’s portrait on the obverse (front) and a shield with the royal coat of arms on the reverse (back). Over the centuries, various designs and modifications were made to the coin, reflecting the changing monarchs and artistic styles. The most famous and widely recognized design is the “St. George and the Dragon,” created by Benedetto Pistrucci in 1817.
