Starting in 1991, the Mexican Mint began crafting Mexican Libertads. They introduced smaller coins in 1991, including the 1/2 oz, along with 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz coins. Just like its smaller counterparts, the 1/2 oz Silver Libertad had its highest mintage in 1992, a record that still stands today.

Obverse

The front of the 2023 Libertad 1/2 oz Silver Coin proudly features Mexico’s coat of arms. This modern design showcases a powerful golden eagle perched on a cactus, engaging in a battle with a snake that it’s holding tightly in its beak and talons. A wreath of oak and laurel leaves surrounds the eagle, adding a touch of elegance. The inscription reads ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.

Reverse

On the reverse side of the 2023 Mexican Libertad Silver Coin, you’ll discover the captivating Winged Victory. This design pays tribute to Mexico’s independence and freedom, inspired by the goddess Victoria (Nike). She stands gracefully atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column, symbolizing triumph and liberty. Inscriptions include 1/2 ONZA, PLATA PURA, 2023 LEY .999, and the mint mark.

History

The design of the modern Mexican Libertad Coins is based on the historic 1921 Gold Centenario. Though the image of Victory has been modernized on the reverse, the coin’s design focus is still close to the original Centenario. The Gold Centenario was so-named as it was released to honor the 100th anniversary of Mexican independence.
