The story of the American Eagle Gold Coin traces back to its debut in 1986 with 4 BU versions and a 1 oz proof strike. The proof Eagle Gold series expanded over the years to include varying weights, such as the 1/2 oz version the following year and the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz versions in 1988. These proof weights have seen consistent annual releases, except for 2009 during economic uncertainties.
