Obverse
The obverse design of the Pre-33 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin showcases Christian Gobrechts 1836 bust of Liberty. Liberty is depicted in left-profile relief, adorned with a coronet crown and surrounded by a ring of 13 stars.
Reverse
On the reverse side of Pre-33 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Coins, the US Mint presents the heraldic eagle. This design includes a front-facing bald eagle holding the US national shield, arrows of war, and an olive branch of peace. The nation of issue and face value of FIVE D. are inscribed, with coins dated 1866-1908 featuring a banner with IN GOD WE TRUST.
History
The introduction of the Liberty Head design in the Half Eagle denomination in 1839 marked the start of an interesting period for this particular denomination. For starters, the US Mint shrunk the diameter of the coin for the third and final time, reducing it from 22.5 MM in the Classic Head era (1834-1838) to 21.6 MM. The coins originally had a diameter of 25 MM when introduced in 1795.
