The one-ounce Proof American Gold Eagle coin holds a face value of $50, measures 32.70 mm in diameter, weighs 33.930 grams, and has a thickness of 2.87 mm. The ½ ounce coin holds a face value of $25, measures 27 mm in diameter, weighs 16.965 grams, and has a thickness of 2.24 mm. The 1/4 ounce coin holds a face value of $10, measures 22 mm in diameter, weighs 8.483 grams, and has a thickness of 1.83 mm. The 1/10 ounce coin holds a face value of $5, measures 16.50 mm in diameter, weighs 3.393 grams, and has a thickness of 1.19 mm.
The obverse design of each Proof American Gold Eagle was originally sculpted by the famed Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the U.S. $20 gold piece, minted from 1907 to 1933. Lady Liberty is prominently placed, striding confidently toward the future, holding an olive branch in her left hand and a torch in her right. Behind her is the stunning image of the rising sun and the Capitol Dome. It bears the inscription "Liberty" as well as the mint mark of origin and the date of issue. On the reverse of the coin is a majestic male bald eagle flying toward his family with an olive branch. It is not surprising, then, that the Proof American Gold Eagle has become a beloved American coin, rich in symbolism and history.
