Obverse
The obverse of Pre-33 $10 Liberty Gold Eagle Coins includes a left-profile portrait of Liberty. She wears her hair tied loosely back in a bun and wears a coronet crown with the word Liberty inscribed on the crown. There are 13 stars featured around her figure and the date mark is on the bottom.
Reverse
On the reverse of Pre-33 $10 Liberty Gold Eagles is the depiction of the heraldic eagle of the United States. The coins always featured United States of America and Ten D. as the inscriptions on this side. From 1838 to 1866, the coins were produced without the national motto on this side. In late 1866, the US Mint added a ribbon above the eagles head that read In God We Trust.
History
Gobrecht was a popular designer and engraver at the Philadelphia Mint. He designed silver dollars for the US Mint and these $10 Gold Eagles. The coin was available from 1838 to 1907 with his design before it was replaced. It was one of just three designs to feature on the Gold Eagle, after the Turban Head and before the Indian Head.
