Coin Collecting Boxes, Tubes & Supplies

Coin Collecting Boxes, Tubes, and Supplies

Part of owning precious metals like gold, silver, platinum and palladium involves proper maintenance and storage. So whether you're an experienced coin collector or just getting started, you'll want to make sure you have the right set of tools on hand to protect your coins from damage and maintain the luster of those brilliant coins for years to come.

Here are a few supplies every coin collector should have in their collecting toolkit:

Protection

Purchasing precious metals isn't just a fun hobby. It's an investment. So it's important to make sure that you have the right supplies to properly care for, store, and protect your valuable assets. We carry a wide range of products to help you safely and securely store any coin for many years. Here are a few ideas to get you started off on the right foot:

Coin Holders

One of the first things any coin collector needs is a way to protect coins from damage and the elements. Pure gold and silver are soft and easily scratched, dented, or nicked. So take time to make sure that each of your individual coins or rounds are kept in their original plastic coin flip. Or better yet, consider purchasing a PVS-free, Air-Tite capsule for every individual coin you purchase.

Once you've purchased a certain number of individual coins or rounds (usually 20-25), you can start stacking them in protective tubes. And if you're a serious collector (anywhere between 250 and 500 coins), you can store several tubes at a time in secure monster boxes. We also carry a wide range of coin albums for the collector who is looking for an easy way to both store and display coins at the same time. Wherever you decide is the best place to store your precious metals, don't forget to throw in a couple packets of silica gel with your collection to keep damaging humidity levels low.

Handling

When it comes to caring for and handling precious metals, there are some steps you can take to make sure that you don't accidentally damage them while enjoying them, as well as a few things you should never do to your coins. Here are a few tools that will not only make coin collecting fun, but keep your investments safe, too:

Gloves

Did you know that the natural oils and acids from you skin can damage a coin? In order to keep your hands from contaminating your precious assets and hurting their value, you should both wash your hands and wear a pair of soft cotton gloves before handling them. And always hold your coins over a soft pad or cloth in case you accidentally drop them.

Magnifiers

Whether to detect minuscule scratches or wear, to find errors, or to expose counterfeits, finding the right magnifier or loupe can help you do just that. A magnifier is a handheld tool that comes in a variety of shapes, styles, and strengths. Unlike a magnifier, a loupe does not have an attached handle, allowing for hands-free viewing. It also comes in stronger magnification powers, allowing for a more close-up analysis of your coins. You'll also want to make sure that you view your coins under a bright light so you don't miss any fine details.

Display

At Provident Metals, we appreciate your desire to not only safely store your precious metals, but enjoy them, too. So we offer a wide range of display and gift boxes that will protect your coins from the elements and allow you to show off or gift your coins in style.

Education

Not sure of the origin of your coin? Or what it might be worth? Having a good reference book on coin collecting on hand can help. The annually-published A Guide Book to United States Coins–also known as “The Red Book”–is one of the most definitive coin-collecting guides for collectors within the United States. Considered the bible of U.S. coin collecting, this coin book provides information on U.S. coins dating all the way back to the 1600s; however, each guide becomes outdated with the printing of the newest.

For those seeking a digital source, the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) is a reliable site that can offer most all insights into coin collecting.
