Introduced in 1899, the $1 Black Eagle design from the Silver Certificate was one of the most popular designs of the series. It was also one of the longest-used designs having graced the $1 Silver Certificate from 1899 when it replaced the Educational Series design until 1923 when it was replaced by the now-famous portrait of President George Washington on American currency. The original notes are hard to find today, but you can still own the coveted image as it has now been replicated over the obverse field of modern US $1 bills to appeal to collectors. Today, you have the opportunity to own this design on the 1899 $1 Black Eagle Dual Presidents Legal Tender Note courtesy of Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Silver Certificates from the United States Mint were first issued in 1878. Through the 1870s, 1880s, and 1890s, most of the denominations saw many design changes. For example, the $1 Silver Certificate was redesigned four times from 1886 to 1899. However, the 1899 debut of the Black Eagle design resulted in the second-longest design used in the series and the second-to-last design in the overall $1 Silver Certificate. These modern US $1 bills have enhanced graphics duplicating the 1899 Black Eagle on the obverse, all with an eye toward attracting collectors.
Obverse
On the obverse side of these 1899 $1 Black Eagle Dual Presidents is the image of Black Eagle with the portraits of President Abraham Lincoln and President Ulysses S. Grant. The Black Eagle design features a bald eagle with its wings flexed out to its sides and a flagpole in its talons that features the American flag.
Reverse
The reverse face of 1899 $1 Black Eagle Dual Presidents comes with the modern $1 Federal Reserve Note design. The all-seeing eye is featured atop a pyramid on the left-hand side, while the Great Seal of the United States is found on the right-hand side of the design field.
History
Silver Certificates were available from the United States starting in 1878, with production ending in 1964. Silver Certificates were initially redeemable for silver dollar coins. In the final year of redemption, Silver Certificates were redeemable for raw silver bullion. The 1899 $1 Black Eagle design was used through 1923 when it was replaced by the final design of the series, that of President George Washington.
