The wild turkey once roamed the North American continent from Canada to Mexico with its numbers estimated to have been in the millions. This was before the arrival of Europeans in the New World. Fast forward a few centuries to the 1930s and the United States estimated to have just 30,000 birds in the wild. Today, the birds numbers have been on the rebound and can be found throughout the continent once again. You now have the opportunity to purchase the 2020 Proof Massachusetts Mohican Wild Turkey 1 oz Silver Coin online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The most common of the six subspecies of wild turkeys in North America is the Eastern wild turkey. The first one the Europeans encountered upon arriving in the New World, its range remains among the largest today as it can still be found in the wild from Maine in the northeast to Florida in the southeast with significant numbers in every state in between. The birds also stretch as far west as Minnesota, Illinois, and Missouri.
Obverse
A Mohican tribal figure is depicted on the obverse of 2020 Proof Massachusetts Mohican Wild Turkey 1 oz Silver Coins. This individual is shown in front-facing relief wearing ceremonial dress with ceremonial face paint. Inscriptions read Mohican, 999 Silver, 2020, One Dollar, and One Ounce.
Reverse
A wild turkey pairing is found on the reverse of the 2020 Proof Massachusetts Mohican Wild Turkey Silver Coins. The male, or tom, looks like what you might expect of a domesticated turkey. He has a full body with large plumage in his tail feathers. The female, or hen, is shown walking in the foreground and has a sleeker, more slender body with long legs. Inscriptions on this face include Massachusetts Wild Turkey, Jamul Sovereign Nation, and America.
History
The Mohican people were an Eastern Algonquian Native American tribe inhabiting a range that included southwestern Vermont, western Massachusetts, northwestern Connecticut, and a large swath of the upper tidal range of the Hudson River Valley in eastern New York. The Mohicans moved voluntarily to central and western New York to join the Iroquois Oneida following the American Revolution and were later forcibly removed from those lands to Wisconsin by the federal government in the 1820s and 1830s.
