First issued by Roger II of Sicily in 1140, the ducat has enjoyed a long and storied history, especially in Eastern Europe, where it was imperially sanctioned in 1566. Officially issued by Austria in 1612, each Austria 4 Ducat Gold Coin contains .4430 Troy Ounces of Fine Gold–one of the most stable assets in the history of civilization.
The obverse of each Austria 4 Ducat bears the right-facing bust of Emperor Franz Joseph I, who reigned portions of Central and Eastern Europe from 1848 – 1916. It has been inscribed in Latin with the words FRANC IOS I D G AVSTRIAE IMPERATOR.
The reverse of each Austria 4 Ducat includes the Austrian Coat of Arms and the imperial double-headed eagle, along with the inscriptions HVNGAR BOHEM GAL LOD ILL REX A A and the year of issue. Designed in the likeness of medieval gold coinage, Austria 4 Ducats are relatively thin–only 0.7 mm thick.
Austria discontinued regular-issue Ducats in 1914. Indeed, 4 Ducats dated 1915 are restrikes, and from 1920 – 1936, 496,501 of the gold coins were produced. The Austrian Mint continues to release 4 Ducats dating 1915 as official restrikes, commemorating the reign of Franz Joseph I and the bygone Austro-Hungarian Empire.

"
My mother gave me her Austrian gold coin with a a beautiful gold solidas a special gift and at that time I was such an idiot, sold it for as scrap value so I can go and gamble at a casino and of course I Iost everything. I still regret what I did to this day and when I saw this exact coin for sale I purchased it immediately and plan to keep it forever. I'ts one of the best gold pieces I have ever owned. I highly recommend at least one for every coin collector, get one while they still have them for sale."

"
I received two coins, both dated 1915, which I have since learned are recently minted "official restrikes" from the Austrian Mint. Although there is something special about 100 year old coins, I could never get the spectacular detail in an old coin that I have in these new, apparently BU, restrikes. And as noted by others, they are so thin, you are afraid you may break them."

"
Very strange coin as others have noted. Its unique in its narrow package. Pretty nice way to buy fractional gold. If you are nervous about euro coins its good to know Provident will buy them back at a fairly narrow spread which tells you they must value them as well. Great addition to any collection. Provident process was flawless and coins came fast."
