History

From 1861 to 1929, the United States issued banknotes that were up to 50% larger than the modern Federal Reserve Notes. Some of the bills were so large they were affectionately known as horse blankets. This applied to notes from several different eras and types of issue from the US, including old Legal Tender Notes, Silver Certificates, Treasure Notes, National Bank Notes, Gold Certificates, Federal Reserve Bank Notes, and even the direct predecessor to modern notes, Federal Reserve Notes produced through 1929.

One such example would be the historic $10 Legal Tender Note Series 1901, better known as the Bison Note. The large banknote featured an American bison on its obverse with portraits of Lewis and Clark. The historic female personification of America, Columbia, is featured on the reverse of the notes with a denomination.
