The Draped Bust design was among the earliest coin styles introduced by the young United States Mint, appearing across several denominations between 1795 and 1807. Its obverse features Lady Liberty with flowing hair and a draped cloth over her shoulder, symbolizing timeless virtue and the values of the early republic. Today, 1805 Draped Bust Large Cent Coins are available in certified condition from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
All 1805 Draped Bust Large Cent Coins available here are secured in slabs and graded About Uncirculated 53 by PCGS. AU53 coins usually show moderate to near-full luster with only minimal signs of wear on raised details. The BN (Brown) designation identifies a copper coin with less than 5% of its original red tone remaining.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1805 Draped Bust Large Cent shows Lady Liberty in right-profile relief with flowing hair and a drape around her neckline. It is said that Gilbert Stuart based the portrait on Philadelphia socialite Ann Willing Bingham, who was admired for her charm and poise during the early 19th century.
Reverse
On the reverse, the 1805 Draped Bust Large Cent displays the coins denomination within a wreath. The outer inscriptions include the issuing country and fractional value, written as 1/100. This design style was widely used on early American copper issues for its clean and practical appearance.
History
The Draped Bust design was created by artist Gilbert Stuart, best known for his portraits of George Washington, and engraved by Robert Scot, the first Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint. The design appeared on multiple coin types, including half dimes, dimes, quarters, half dollars, and silver dollars, giving U.S. coinage of the time a consistent look.
