While the US Mint is famed for coins like the American Eagle and American Buffalo for precious metals buyers, the mint also has the responsibility of coining millions of circulation pieces for economic uses each year. Though the US Mint no longer issues circulation coins using precious metals, it does strike some of these designs with silver content for commemorative US Mint Proof Sets. Proof Sets have been available from the mint for decades and have evolved with time to reflect newly adopted technology and changing coin designs in the U.S.
Since the 1960s, the US Mint has been issuing proof sets. In the 21st century, there have been three major types of US Mint Proof Sets issued each year. These include the following options:
A few notes to keep in mind regarding these sets. In both the Proof ATB Silver Quarter Set and the Proof Silver Set, the silver content of the coins was 90% silver with 10% copper through 2018. In 2019, the silver content was enhanced to 99.9% silver. There is no 2021 Proof ATB Silver Quarter Set. With just one ATB design in 2021, the US Mint simply included the coin in the US Mint Proof Silver Set. Finally, the US Mint Proof Silver Sets have silver content in only the dime, quarter, and half dollar. The penny, nickel, and Sacagawea dollar have the standard alloys used by the US Mint when striking the coins for circulation.
All US Mint Proof Sets have beautiful design strikes not used for circulation. There is greater relief on the designs, frosted finishes on the primary elements, and mirror-like background fields.
The United States Mint packages its US Mint Proof Sets of all varieties with the coins grouped together in clear holders. These sturdy plastic holders are packaged inside of a commemorative shipping sleeve and the entire set comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. Please note, this is how the US Mint originally packages them and not necessarily how the sets will be offered in every listing at Provident Metals.
