These coins have been issued annually since 1997. From 1997 to 2012, these coins were released with a purity otherwise known as Britannia silver. This equated to a purity of .958 silver. In 2013, the Royal Mint increased the purity to .999 silver. To go with this, the coins decreased in size from 32.45 Grams to 31.21 Grams. The diameter also decreased from 40 mm to 38.61 mm.
The obverse of these coins displays the reigning British monarch at the time. In 2023, King Charles III appeared on the obverse. However, the Phillip Nathan design of Britania holding a trident and shield, also known as the classic standing Britannia, is the most well-known and most commonly used. This design has been seen in the series every year since 2012.
