Mexican Peso Silver Coins have a rich history dating back to the mid-1800s. Pesos were minted in various denominations and contained unique designs reflecting the culture and history of Mexico. At Provident Metals, we have several Mexican Peso Silver Coins available. Learn more about them here, at Provident Metals.
During the Spanish colonization of Mexico in the 16th century, silver deposits were discovered throughout. This led to the creation of many coins such as the Spanish dollar and the Mexican real, among others. However, coins were in denominations called “reales” from the 16th to the 19th century.
The Second Mexican Empire of 1863 to 1867 led to the minting of coins in denominations of pesos. 100 centavos equaled 1 peso, thus silver coins of 5, 10, 20, 25, and 50 centavos were struck, along with a 1 peso coin.
Over the years, other denominations were added such as the 5, 10, 25, 100, 200, 500, 1,000, and even a 5,000 silver peso coin. The purity of these coins fluctuated over time as well.
Currently, the 1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 peso coins are circulation issues.
