Like many other collections from KOMSCO, the primary design on these gold medals is refreshed each year. Taekwondo is a form of martial arts and a combative sport. It was developed by Korean martial artists who taught forms of martial arts in new kwans, or schools, in Korea in the 1940s and 1950s. At its core, taekwondo relies on head-height kicks, spinning kicks executed while jumping, and speed. However, punching and fists also play an important part in the execution of any martial arts movement.

Obverse

On the obverse of 1/2 oz Gold 2020 South Korean Taekwondo Medals is a depiction of the Taegeuk. The design element on this side features a swirling element that centers on a Taegeuk. The Taegeuk is central to the modern flag of the Republic of Korea, but once featured on the first national flag of Korea from the 1880s. The design of the Taegeuk represents balance in the universe, with one half representing positive cosmic forces and the other representing negative cosmic forces. The inscriptions on this face of the medal include 2020 and Korea.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1/2 oz Gold 2020 South Korean Taekwondo Medals features an image of a martial artist delivering a destructive punch. Taekwondo is a blend of Japanese and Chinese martial arts with traditional Korean forms of martial arts that were once suppressed during the Japanese Occupation in the 1930s and 1940s. These forms of martial arts relied more heavily on hand techniques. Like kicks, hand maneuvers in taekwondo can be executed from standing, jumping, spinning, and rushing positions. A fore fist punch while rushing forward can prove devastating, even fatal. Inscriptions on this side include Taekwondo and 1/2 oz Fine Gold 999.

History

Taekwondo was created by Korean martial artists who were originally trained in Japanese and Chinese martial arts who blended in three different forms of traditional Korean martial arts practiced by indigenous Koreans. These martial arts were Taekkyeon, Subak, and Gwonbeop.
