The South African Gold Krugerrand is one of the most recognized gold coins in history. First released in the 1960s, it set the stage for gold bullion investing as we know it. Today, Provident Metals offers the South African Krugerrand 1/2 oz Gold Coin, available from assorted years depending on current inventory.

Highlights:

  • Worlds longest running gold bullion coin program!
  • Ships in a protective flip or sealed tubes of 15!
  • Contains oz of 22-karat (.9167) gold.
  • Depicts the springbok antelope on the reverse.
  • Paul Kruger, namesake of the coin, featured on the obverse.
  • Official bullion product of South Africa.

When the South African Mint introduced the Krugerrand in 1967, it was the only gold coin of its kind available for private investment. The coin was created to help South Africa export its gold and encourage more people to buy gold bullion. These coins arrive in plastic flips or sealed tubes of 15 coins, with date marks chosen at random.

Obverse

On the obverse, theres a left-profile portrait of Paul Kruger, the former president of the South African Republic. Otto Schultz created this design, which is featured on every Krugerrand coin.

Reverse

The reverse displays a springbok antelope, South Africas national symbol. The text on both sides is written in both English and Afrikaans. Each order placed with Provident Metals will contain coins from random years based on availability at the time of shipping.

History

For years, the Krugerrand led the global gold coin market. It held a strong position until the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf made its debut in 1979, bringing new competition to the field. The coins decline in popularity in Western countries was due to political issues tied to apartheid in South Africa. As a result, some countries placed restrictions on Krugerrand imports during the late 1970s and 1980s. Still, the coin remained in demand. Between 1974 and 1985, around 22 million Krugerrands were imported into the U.S. Even during those years, collectors and investors found ways to get the coin, and it remains a solid example of gold coin design.
