Obverse

President George Washington features at the center of the obverse field on the $1 Washington Crossing the Delaware Legal Tender Note. His portrait is enhanced with colorization. There is an image on the right that is based on an 1851 oil painting from Emanuel Leutze. Washington stands confidently with his foot raised on the edge of the boat as his troops row across the icy Delaware River, while one holds up an American flag. The left side of the note has the original Stars and Stripes in the background behind a colorized image of the new 2021 US Quarter reverse design depicting the river crossing.

Reverse

For the reverse side of the $1 Washington Crossing the Delaware Legal Tender Note, you will find the standard design elements. The word ONE is printed across the center, with the all-seeing eye atop the pyramid on the left and the Great Seal of the United States on the right.

History

General Washington and his forces did not cross the Delaware River just once, but three times in total between December 25, 1776, and January 3, 1777. Washington moved his forces across on Christmas night to attack the Hessians on December 26th. He crossed back to Pennsylvania only to cross back to New Jersey on January 1, 1777, and defeat Lord Cornwallis and his British Army reinforcements on January 2nd. The next day, Washington and the Continentals went on to defeat the rearguard of Cornwallis forces as well.
