His thick, curly white beard dominates his face as his winter cap is topped by a bell. The background field has snowflakes with an inscription of Merry Christmas included.

History

The appearance of Santa Claus as he is known in Canada and the United States, with a red coat, white fur collar and cuffs, and matching trousers originated in the 1823 poem A Visit from St. Nicholas. The image that inspired was cemented in North American culture by illustrator Thomas Nast and his 1881 illustration of Santa Claus as a portly fellow with the aforementioned outfit and a bag of toys for children.

Santa Claus grew out of the stories of the 4^th century Greek bishop Saint Nicholas, as well as the British figure Father Christmas and Dutch figure Sinterklaas. Others suggest that Santa Claus as the figure is known today has absorbed characteristics of the Germanic pagan god Wodan. Wodan would lead a ghostly procession through the sky during the pagan midwinter event known as Yule.
