The Buffalo Nickel coin from the United States Mint was not only one of the most popular five-cent designs in American history, it was one of the most popular designs ever featured on any denomination of American currency. The Buffalo Nickel was designed in 1913 by James Earle Fraser and inspired by Frasers life growing up near the plains of the Upper Midwest. Today, you have the chance to purchase the 1 oz Copper Buffalo Round online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
James Earle Fraser was born in Winona, Minnesota, and raised in the Upper Midwest. Early in his life, he had exposure to the grandeur and wilderness of the American Plains following his father on work trips. Frasers father worked for the railroads and made frequent trips into the Dakotas where he would encounter some of the few remaining buffalo roaming in the wild. This would help inspire his designs for the Buffalo Nickel.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1 oz Copper Buffalo Round bears the image of an American bison from the reverse of the Buffalo Nickel. The design featured here captures an American bison in left-profile relief standing on a small mound of dirt. Inscriptions on this face of the copper round include only .999 Fine Copper and One AVDP Ounce.
Reverse
On the reverse face of the 1 oz Copper Buffalo Round is a common American shield design. This appears on all of the designs issued from this private mint. The design includes a set of eagles wings with a version of the US national shield at the center. The American flag flutters overhead of the design with USA inscribed below.
History
Fraser was already a noted designer, artist, and sculptor when he was commissioned to work on a new design for the American nickel. Fraser was commissioned by the administration of President William Howard Taft in 1912 to create a design and developed images of a Native American for the obverse, with this American bison design on the reverse. The nickel design from Fraser was struck first in 1913, replacing the Liberty Head Nickel from Charles E. Barber and was in production until 1938. The Buffalo Nickel contained 75% copper and 25% nickel throughout its production history at the US Mint.
