The Buffalo Nickel was one of the most popular circulation US coin designs of the 20th century. Among the first smaller denomination coins with fresh images, the Buffalo Nickel was redesigned in 1913 and was the first major circulation coin with design themes reflecting Native American culture. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase 1 oz Copper Indian Replica Rounds from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with protective flips, tubes of 16, or boxes of 400!
  • Replicates the Buffalo Nickel coin designs!
  • Contains 1 AVDP oz of .999 pure copper.
  • The stoic Native American figure is featured on the obverse.
  • An American bald eagle with the letters USA are found on the reverse.
  • Available brand new!

James Earle Fraser was the man responsible for the redesign of the US nickel. Beginning with the administration of President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905, all American circulation coins were redesigned. This included the four remaining Gold Eagle denominations, as well as the penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and half dollar. Among the smaller denominations, the nickel was the second coin redesigned after the penny was redone in 1909.

Obverse

A stoic Native American figure is featured on the obverse of the 1 oz Copper Indian Replica Round from SilverTowne. This is the same image Fraser used on the Buffalo Nickel and it captures an indigenous tribal figure in right-profile relief with the word Liberty inscribed on this side. Fraser personally stated in an interview during the 1930s that he used the facial features of three real-life Native American tribal leaders in the early 20th century as the inspiration for his portrait and that it did not reflect directly one individual person.

Reverse

An American bald eagle is featured in flight on the reverse of the 1 oz Copper Indian Replica Round. SilverTowne uses this common design on the reverse of all of its 1 oz copper products that recreate American coin designs.

History

The Buffalo Nickel design was crafted by Fraser and approved by the administration of President William Howard Taft in 1913. Frasers design for the nickel would remain in use until early 1938, at which point the US Mint switched production to the current Jefferson nickel design still used today.
