Mexican Onzas at Provident Metals provide an affordable way to diversify your portfolio and expand your foreign coin collection. These hard-to-find coins are composed of 1 troy ounce of .925 pure silver and arrive in uncirculated condition.
The obverse of each 1 oz Silver Onza features an obsolete hand-operated coin press, along with the name of the Mexican Mint in Spanish: CASA DE MONEDA DE MXICO. The date is also included.
The reverse of each Mexican Onza features a hand scale design, along with the phrase “UNA ONZA TROY DE PLATA PURA,” which translates to mean one troy ounce of pure silver. The coin is inscribed with its weight and purity, and has a diameter of 41mm.
History of the Mexican Silver Onza
La Casa de Moneda de Mxico is the oldest mint on the American continents. Established by viceroy Antonio de Mendoza of Spain in 1535, the mint was mandated by King Charles I, who was eager to open the first New World mint.
For the next 400 years, silver eight-reales and pesos circulated widely across the Americas and into Asia. In 1949, the Mexican Mint issued the first Silver Onza, and the coin was resurrected briefly from 1978-1980. Today, all Mexican coins are produced in San Luis Potos, though the mint is headquartered at the Museo Nacional de las Culturas in Mexico City.

"By far one of my favorite coins. The old-school, bigger than a silver dollar (+more silver content than a Morgan) "clang" that you hear when holding these or in your pocket sounds awesome. My kids' bug-out bags are packed with these, since they don't need to "protected" in a coin tube."

"I've been picking up a few of these with other silver rounds, bars and / or gold in most of my orders. I like that this is a FULL troy ounce for about 2 bucks less premium than for the naked angel Libertad. And they are plain ole fun to hold and clink together.
These old 'scale' coins were used as currency and I even like that they are sometimes circulated. I am not buying numis, I don't need Brilliant Uncirculated. I want a full troy ounce for a low price and this is it, and it is fun to add alongside silver rounds, silver bars and silver dollars. Think about this: I've been able for the most part, in any given purchase, to get thiis coin at the same price as a circulated US Morgan silver dollar or Peace dollar which is .77 troy ounce of silver. In other words I'm getting a historic, heavy 'silver dollar type' with .23 MORE ounce of silver than a US silver dollar for the same price. Why wouldn't I want to do that? To me this is one of the best kept secrets of bullion buying in North America. I can use it as a 'storehouse of value' locking in real wealth as I get myself out of paper currency, or I can use it for emergency barter and to buy / sell when the time comes that our currencies are no longer desirable. This will always be a recognized, known coin for commerce whether I'm in Canada, USA or Mexico." |

And I love the look of this coin. Sterling silver is a good look for a coin. Deeper and less shiny than .999. More "silver" than a morgan/peace's 90%. I'll definitely order more."
