A latent security feature is also included that has been struck directly into the medal. When you shift the vertical lines of this feature around, the Korean characters for Bonghwang will appear. Youll also find an inscription reading Korean Phoenix 2021.

The reverse side of the 1 oz Silver 2021 Phoenix Medal includes a motif of the Korean Presidential seal. This emblem features two Phoenix birds facing each other and a Yin-Yang symbol in the center. Youll find inscribed on this face the words REPUBLIC OF KOREA, 1 OZ FINE SILVER .999 KOMSCO.

History

The origin of the Phoenix is not entirely known, but many scholars attribute its existence to Egyptian myths. Western knowledge of this special bird is largely due to Greek historian Herodotus, who traveled to Egypt and reported on many fantastical beasts there. The Phoenix, known for its regenerative abilities and crimson feathers, bears the hallmarks of many other creatures. This includes the tail of a fish, a face of a swallow, and the neck of a snake. There are numerous variations of the Phoenix myth and its unique appearance. In South Korean culture, the bird goes by the name Bonghwang and has been an important figure for the countrys rulers. Even today if you visit the Presidential Blue House, a beautiful Phoenix statue can be found there.
