The eagles opposing heads represent a view toward the future while never forgetting the past. The inscriptions on this side read Germania, 2019, and 5 Mark.

History

The inclusion of the cross on the obverse is a twist on the Iron Cross. The Iron Cross was a military decoration that was introduced by King Frederick William III, King of Prussia, in 1813 during the midst of the Napoleonic Wars. It was later adopted by the German Empire in 1871 as a military decoration as well.
