Obverse

The obverse side of Silver Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat Rounds features a depiction of a hooded figure. This brave figure, ready to challenge death to curry favor with Fortune, is shown with a skull face and a hooded shroud over its head. There is a butterfly resting upon its chest in the lower right with a banner wrapped around the front that reads Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat.

Reverse

On the reverse face of 1 oz Silver Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat Rounds is an image of the Intaglio Mint seal. The mint logo features a Romanesque column I with a beaded border immediately around it and an inscription of Intaglio Mint Est. 2010 within the central field. The primary background element comes with a spinning set of radial lines. Around the outer design rim, you will find inscriptions of One Troy Ounce and .999 Fine Silver. A date mark in Roman numerals is featured on the rim as well.

History

Although the phrase Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat is first cited and credited to Cicero, it is believed that the phrase may have roots in Ancient Greece some three centuries earlier. The Ancient Greek philosopher Democritus coined a phrase reading boldness is the beginning of action, but fortune controls how it ends. Some have said that the Latin phrase is a rewording of this Greek phrase.

One of the modern twists on the phrase comes from the French microbiologist and chemist, Louis Pasteur. He offered a twist on the phrase that read, in Latin, Fortuna Eruditis Favet, that translated as Fortune favors the prepared mind. The word Fortune is often capitalized because the Latin language referred to the Roman goddess of fortune, Fortuna, with its use of the word.
