Introducing the 1 oz Silver U.S. Assay Office Vintage Art Round, a piece of history brought to you by Provident Metals. Back in January of 1980, silver reached an astonishing price of almost $50, equivalent to over $160 an ounce today when adjusted for inflation. This surge was triggered by the Hunt Brothers, who amassed silver to safeguard against market shifts. What followed was famously known as Silver Thursday, aimed to rapidly lower silver prices, leading the government to release its silver stockpile into the market. And now, you have the chance to own a piece of this historic moment through the 1 oz Silver U.S. Assay Office Vintage Art Round, available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Every order of the 1 oz Silver U.S. Assay Office Vintage Art Round will arrive meticulously encased in protective plastic flips, ensuring the preservation of your prized silver round. These rounds bear the “CC” mint mark, although they were not minted in Carson City. Instead, this mint mark is tied to the Continental Coin & Jewelry Company, which played a key role in crafting these remarkable rounds.
Obverse
The obverse side of the Silver U.S. Assay Office Vintage Art Round proudly showcases an eagle soaring amidst the backdrop of the American flag. The design takes center stage on the obverse, flanked by wreaths on either side. The round’s unique identifying marks are positioned at the top and bottom of the design, adding to its distinct charm. These marks include ONE TROY OUNCE, 31.1 GRAMS, .999 FINE SILVER, and SILVER TRADE UNIT.
Reverse
The reverse field of the 1 oz U.S. Assay Office Vintage Art Round presents additional identifying marks. Inscriptions on this field include MINTED FROM U.S. STRATEGIC STOCKPILE SILVER, 1981, CC, and FORMERLY STORED AT U.S. ASSAY OFFICE SAN FRANCISCO.
History
The Hunt Brothers, Nelson, Lamar, and William, embarked on a mission to control the silver market. Their accumulation of non-government silver peaked at around 1/3 of the total holdings before 1979. The year 1979 saw silver’s value soar from just over $6 to an all-time high of $49.45 per ounce, an impressive 713% surge. To counter this price surge, the government swiftly released 165 million ounces of silver into the market, causing the Hunt Brothers to suffer a significant financial loss of around $1.7 billion.
